Earlier this month, Taxi driver Mohamed Delowar Hossain stood and won for the Conservatives in the King’s Hedges by-election and will be the only Conservative councillor at the city council.
Cllr Hossain won the seat after receiving 622 votes, with the Labour candidate coming in second after receiving 598 votes. Cllr Hossain said he was “honoured” to win, and said he wanted to "raise people’s voices about the congestion charge".
“I will be very active, I will work with all the community, and the whole of Cambridgeshire, whose voice was not heard and I want to raise their voice about the congestion charge, the road closure, the potholes. I want to be active day and night. I previously mentioned, I am a taxi driver, I am out day and night, and my residents can get me 24/7. I do not need any certain day for my surgeries, my surgeries are open for everyone for any day.”
When asked about this victory, our Area Chairman Douglas Hansen-Luke said “A real result for the Conservatives in Cambridge City. Victory achieved through identifying a key issue, the congestion charge, and then linking with an excellent candidate and a very strong campaign team.”
